The following post is submitted by one of our blog members, Haya Winiarz, in answer to a question I posed to her.
The question came to me: How does randomness fit with the idea of a friendly, orderly universe? Isn’t randomness the opposite of order and intentionality? What do you think?
You’ve got the wheels of my mind turning with your brilliant question.
Although many processes in nature seem to follow increasingly random patterns, from Hassidic teachings we learn that every event in nature is part of Hashgacha (Divine providence). Every event in the universe is custom designed to bring about a web of infinitely unfolding directed events, all subject to the intervention of consciousness.
Computerized random number generators are electronic devices designed to simulate true randomness. Are they subject to the intervention of consciousness?
The Global Coherence Initiative website by Annette Deyhle, PhD and Rollin McCraty, PhD, describes research on this subject conducted by Roger Nelson and his team at Princeton University for the Global Consciousness Project. Nelson utilized an international network of random number generators to investigate the effect of consciousness. Their findings suggest that human consciousness and emotion create or interact with a global field, which affects the randomness of these devices.
The most noteworthy change towards statistically significant non-randomness in the random number generators occurred during the terror attacks on the U.S. World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Even more striking was the finding that the random number generators were significantly affected about three hours before the first attack, suggesting a global collective intuition concerning the impending event.
Before (!), during and after any significant events of human outpouring of consciousness, intention or prayer, random number generators around the world, predictably generate a statistically significant pattern which deviates from true randomness and continues to do so for a while later.
Similarly, measurements of Earth’s magnetic field performed by magnetometers on two National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) space weather satellites, deviated significantly from the norm during the same time period, starting several minutes before the tragic 911 event.
The Global Coherence Initiative is planning to deploy a Global Coherence Monitoring System (GCMS): a global network of 12 sensitive magnetic field detectors to monitor fluctuations in the earth’s geomagnetic fields and resonances in the ionosphere. The first sensor is already sending live data to the GCI website from Boulder Creek, California. Researchers at GCI postulate that earth’s resonant frequencies will reflect the effects of collective human emotion. These frequencies are intriguingly in the same range as human heart rhythms and brain waves.
If human consciousness is as significant as to effect the very magnetic field of earth, how much more infinitely significant is the mind of G-d! Yet, the mind of G-d reigns in concealment. Tzimzum (contraction), according to Kabbalah, signifies contraction of G-d’s apparent-ness in our seemingly random and increasingly disordered world. Our sages explain that G-d is hidden in order to allow for human free will. I enjoy comparing this to the healthy maternal instinct of allowing room for one’s child to develop individuality.
This freedom however, should ideally not bring the child to underestimate his relationship with the parent. The natural consequence of underestimating G-d’s involvement in our lives is an apparent further concealment of divine providenceלֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ וַהֲלַכְתֶּם עִמִּי בְּקֶרִי וְהָלַכְתִּי עִמָּכֶם בַּחֲמַת קֶרִי … “If you will go with me in happenstance and I will go with you in the heat (commonly translated as wrath) of happenstance” (Leviticus 26: 27, 28). I am intrigued by the Torah’s choice of the word in Hebrew in this verse, חמה, which indicates a state of heated-ness.
The second law of thermodynamics determines that the entropy of a closed system always increases or remains constant. Entropy is also a measure of the tendency of a process, such as a chemical reaction, to be entropy-favored, or to proceed in a particular direction, determining that thermal energy always flows spontaneously from regions of higher temperature to regions of lower temperature, in the form of heat.
The definition of ENTROPY according to Miriam Webster free dictionary is the following.
1 : a measure of the unavailable energy in a closed thermodynamic system that is also usually considered to be a measure of the system’s disorder, that is a property of the system’s state, and that varies directly with any reversible change in heat in the system and inversely with the temperature of the system; broadly: the degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system
2 a: the degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity
b: a process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder
3 : chaos, disorganization, randomness
This, חמה, heated-ness related to a state of increasing systemic chaos, disorganization and randomness is the thermodynamic process which governs most physical processes. All material substances tend to degrade over time.
Dr. William Tiller, professor emeritus from Stanford University, hypothesized the existence of negative space time.
Richard Gerber, M.D. in the 4th chapter of his book Vibrational Medicine affectionately calls Dr. Tiller’s hypothesis, the Tiller- Einstein Model. According to this model, as a particle passes the threshold of the speed of light, which is considered to be physically impossible, it enters a realm which is divergent from our world in many ways, including the existence of negative entropy, that is, that instead of order breaking down it is a world where thermodynamically ORDER IS BEING RESTORED.
The existence of a negative space time world is derived from applying numbers greater than the speed of light to the Einstein–Lorentz Transformation(see attachment), to produce results which are the square root of -1.
Most mathematicians call such numbers imaginary numbers for obvious reasons. Certain pioneering mathematicians, however, such as Charles Muses, consider the square root of -1 to fall under the category of hyper-numbers. These hyper-numbers are necessary, according to Muses, to mathematically describe higher dimensional phenomena and to solve equations of electromagnetic and quantum theory.
This would mathematically suggest that as Dr. Tiller hypothesized, a thermodynamically opposite world does conceivably exist, where reordering is the standard direction of events.
Interestingly, the only systems in our physical world which tend toward greater orderliness rather than the naturally increasing disorder of entropy are living systems.
This sheds a whole new light on the mitzvah, commandment of ובחרת בחיים! You shall choose life!
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
As we increasingly choose significance and meaning in nature, it does appear to unfold more often in ways which are recognizably significant and orderly, and health does appear to be significantly enhanced when we choose to live a more meaningful life. When Dr. Viktor Frankl spoke of saying yes to life, he could be taken literally.
The hand of hashgacha(divine providence) responds to our free choice conception of reality and conceivably directs the very thermodynamics of events accordingly.
We are faced moment by moment with either succumbing to natural breakdown, churban (destruction), or consciously choosing life and rebuilding of the Sanctuary for the Divine in this world.
Living systems may be open systems, constantly receiving an influx of energy from a world of order. Eretz Hachaim, The World of Life, as coined by our sages, the world where order is forever increasing, is also called Olam Haba, the world that is forever ‘coming’, infiltrating into our world.
This influx of life force is not only possible but it is the very foundation of our continued existence.
As we choose life supporting thoughts and emotions we are increasing an essential thriving towards the ultimate redemption, when the darkness of night will be illumined as day. Our world, according to our sages, is the reason for all creation. It will, through our conscious choice, become the world of life and a dira batachtonim, a proper dwelling place for the Divine in the lower realms.
This sheds a whole new light on the concept of the resurrection of the dead, which seems to be happening conceptually on a continuum throughout history however increasingly, bringing the meaningfulness of our world alive as we intend it!
In the Talmud, (כתובות ה) Bar Kapara taught- gedolim maase tzaddikim mimaase shamayim vaaretz. = The work of the righteous is greater than even the creation of heaven and earth.”דרש בר קפרא: גדולים מעשה צדיקים יותר ממעשה שמים וארץ (כתובות ה
Ve’amech kulam tzaddikim, kulam yershu aretz! Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified. (Isaiah 60:21)
P.S. I am adding a quote from The Global Coherence Initiative website by Annette Deyhle, PhD and Rollin McCraty, PhD
Heart Coherence: an Optimal State for Creating a Better World
Heart coherence, which is reflected by a smooth, sine wave like heart-rhythm pattern, is a distinct mode of synchronized psychophysiological functioning associated with sustained positive emotion. It is a state of energetic alignment and cooperation between heart, mind, body and spirit. In coherence, energy is accumulated, not wasted, leaving the individual more energy to manifest intention and harmonious outcomes. Research has already shown that the electromagnetic field generated by the heart radiates out like a radio wave and interacts with other people. GCI researchers theorize that a non-local field can be substantially amplified in groups of coherent individuals, thus expanding the benefits and reach of coherence energy. Today, more people than ever believe meditation, prayer, spiritual and healing practices, affirmations and intentions can affect the world in positive ways. Researchers at the Institute of HeartMath are exploring how all of these practices can be facilitated by adding heart coherence and can have an even greater and lasting impact. The next step is to demonstrate that, collectively, groups of coherent individuals can modulate planetary energetic fields to positively affect the collective consciousness.
A major factor in the global consciousness shift is enough people realizing the need to become more self-responsible for their own energy, thoughts, feelings and actions. It is each person’s responsibility to establish balance within their own self and with the earth. Our view is that every action counts, and by “taking charge” and increasing our coherence baseline, this shift and consciousness upgrade will be reflected in the global field environment as well. This in turn will create a mutually beneficial feedback loop between human beings and the earth’s energetic systems.
